The Dominican Republic is the second largest nation in the
Caribbean. Occupying the central and eastern two-thirds of the island
Hispaniola, it is approximately 20,000 square miles. Since 1966 it has
been a democratic nation with elections held every four years. As part
of the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI), it has maintained political
stability and close ties with the U.S. government; it is also one of
six Caribbean nations holding a tax treaty with the United States. The
official language is Spanish, and the currency is the Dominican Peso.
